An Allen’s Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin), drawn with a nibbed pen in various colors of ink. This particular bird perished after getting caught inside a neighbor’s greenhouse, but fortunately I was able to complete this sketch before a cat (the tabby cat in the other art square) grabbed it off my art desk and quickly rendered it unrecognizable. Printed on high-quality artist paper and mounted to a slim wooden back. Each frame is completely handmade from milling to finishing, a collaboration with a former neighbor who is a master woodworker.
Purchasing this item means you have chosen the hummingbird artwork, but the frame surrounding it will be a surprise. You are welcome to request redwood or bocote wood in the notes for the order and I will accommodate your preference if possible, but please note that I have very limited inventory.
About the framed art square project: The frames have various profiles and are made of one of two kinds of rare woods (bocote and old-growth redwood), both of which were salvaged by the woodworker (neither were harvested/ bought for this project). Bocote is a hard, heavy tropical wood with striking grain patterns and the old-growth redwood was originally part of a water tank. For this project we kept the dimensions of the frames the same but experimented with the two different woods, several frame profiles, and two finishes (beeswax and linseed oil). Given that there are also three different artwork options (cat, hummingbird, oak leaf), every piece in this limited collection of 48 is similar to the others but also a unique work of art in its own right.
